Motorcycles & scooter travel insurance
Why do you need travel insurance while on a motorcycle?
Riding a motorcycle or moped overseas is a great way to see more, but it also comes with extra risks. Accidents can happen even to the most careful riders, from unexpected road conditions to unfamiliar traffic rules.
Our Comprehensive insurance helps cover medical expenses if something goes wrong. With PassportCard, you can enjoy the freedom of the open road knowing you’re protected every kilometre of the way.
Does PassportCard provide cover while motorcycling?
Yes! PassportCard covers you as part of our Comprehensive cover, while you’re a passenger or riding motorcycles and mopeds overseas and are abiding by the conditions listed below and in our PDS.
Key Coverage Conditions for Motorcycles & Mopeds
- You must wear a helmet, whether riding as a driver or passenger, regardless of local law.
- You hold an appropriate driving licence for the country, region, state or territory you are visiting and for the size of the vehicle you are driving.
- If you’re using a motorcycle rated 125cc or higher, you hold a current and valid licence required for driving an equivalent rated motorcycle in Australia.
- If you are a passenger, the driver must hold the correct licence for the country you are in.
For full conditions please refer to our PDS.
Tips when you going to a Motorcycling adventure
- Make sure you meet the visitor entry requirements for each country you’ll be riding through and check visa conditions, including how long you can stay.
- Research local road rules and licensing requirements for motorcyclists – some countries may require an International Driving Permit or a local licence in addition to your Australian licence.
- Double-check that your motorcycle licence is valid for the size of the bike you plan to ride (especially if it’s 125cc or higher).
- Always wear a helmet – it’s not just smart, it’s required for your PassportCard cover.
- Inspect your motorcycle or scooter before setting off to make sure it’s in safe working condition.
- Don’t drink and drive – Not only is it illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, but your travel insurance will be invalid.
- Pack smart – bring lightweight gear, a small first aid kit, and weather-appropriate clothing for changing conditions.
- Make sure you have a reliable navigation app or GPS and download offline maps in case of poor signal areas.
- Keep a copy of your important documents (passport, licence, insurance policy) both digitally and in print.
- Notify your bank of your travel plans and consider carrying a travel money card for easy access to local currency.
- Contact your mobile provider or buy a pre-paid international SIM so you can stay connected on the road.
- Plan regular rest stops – fatigue is one of the biggest risks for riders on long trips.
- Share your itinerary with a family member or friend, and check in with them regularly.
- Save local emergency numbers and know how to reach consular assistance if needed.
- And of course – organise your travel insurance with PassportCard so you’re covered for your motorcycling adventure abroad.
