Tips when you going to a Motorcycling adventure

  • Make sure you meet the visitor entry requirements for each country you’ll be riding through and check visa conditions, including how long you can stay.
  • Research local road rules and licensing requirements for motorcyclists – some countries may require an International Driving Permit or a local licence in addition to your Australian licence.
  • Double-check that your motorcycle licence is valid for the size of the bike you plan to ride (especially if it’s 125cc or higher).
  • Always wear a helmet – it’s not just smart, it’s required for your PassportCard cover.
  • Inspect your motorcycle or scooter before setting off to make sure it’s in safe working condition.
  • Don’t drink and drive – Not only is it illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, but your travel insurance will be invalid.
  • Pack smart – bring lightweight gear, a small first aid kit, and weather-appropriate clothing for changing conditions.
  • Make sure you have a reliable navigation app or GPS and download offline maps in case of poor signal areas.
  • Keep a copy of your important documents (passport, licence, insurance policy) both digitally and in print.
  • Notify your bank of your travel plans and consider carrying a travel money card for easy access to local currency.
  • Contact your mobile provider or buy a pre-paid international SIM so you can stay connected on the road.
  • Plan regular rest stops – fatigue is one of the biggest risks for riders on long trips.
  • Share your itinerary with a family member or friend, and check in with them regularly.
  • Save local emergency numbers and know how to reach consular assistance if needed.
  • And of course – organise your travel insurance with PassportCard so you’re covered for your motorcycling adventure abroad.

Motorcycle travel insurance FAQs

Yes. PassportCard covers you while riding a motorcycle or moped overseas, as long as you meet a few simple requirements. You’ll need to wear a helmet, hold the correct licence for the country you’re visiting, and follow local traffic laws. If you’re riding a bike rated 125cc or higher, you must also hold a valid Australian motorcycle licence. Please refer to the PDS for full conditions

No extra add-on is needed, as long as you’re riding for leisure and not taking part in a professional or competitive activity. Simply make sure you meet the safety and licensing conditions outlined in your policy to stay covered.

No. Medicare won’t cover you in most overseas destinations. That’s why travel insurance with cover for medical emergencies and evacuation is essential, so you won’t be left with expensive hospital or transport bills if something goes wrong while riding abroad.

Even though you’ll still have access to Medicare, travel insurance can still be useful. It can help if your trip is cancelled or interrupted, or if your luggage, riding gear, or personal items are lost, stolen, or damaged while travelling.

We do not provide cover if you are competing or participating in a competition, race or motocross activity.

Yes we do cover you while riding a scooter in Bali as long and you comply with the conditions outlined in the PDS.
